Edge Sharpen

Tools: File, edge bevel guide, brake retainers, vise/bench

1. Prepare skis, tools Install brake retainers
Place ski in vise, edge-up, base facing away from you.
Make sure you have deburred edges first with a whetstone
Use the spring clamp to hold the file to the edge bevel guide.

2. Sharpen side edge

Place the edge guide along the ski base and lower it until the file touches the edge. With medium pressure, stroke toward the tip of the file (away from the tail). Keep the base leg of the guide flat on the ski base. Starting at one end of the ski, work in 10-12" overlapping sections. Pull the file toward you while it's cutting; lift it off the ski and set it down again at the beginning of the stroke.

The file should cut smoothly with each stroke. If it skips or hops, try putting less or more pressure on it.

If it does not appear to be cutting, clean the file, or use a new, sharper one.

When working near the binding, move the file on the edge bevel guide so that there is less overhang; move the file toward its tail. Otherwise, it will catch in the binding.

When working on the ski tip and tail, move the file on the guide so there is more overhang. This prevents overuse of the tip of the file.

Animation of sharpening...
Test sharpness every 2-3" with fingernail test. Stroke fingernail across edge at 45 angle with medium pressure. A sharp edge will peel off a curl of nail. A dull edge will not.
Turn the ski over in the vise to work on the other edge. Point the ski tip in the other direction so the base faces away from you.
4. Finish Use a brush to wipe any filings off the base and edges.
Clean the file. Scrub vigorously with the file card to remove all filings from between the teeth of the file.
