Edge Finish

Tools: Emery paper, brake retainers, vise/bench, water

1. Prepare skis, tools Install brake retainers
Place ski in vise, base up
Make sure you have sharpened the edges first with a file (and tested them with the fingernail test).
Tear off a small piece of emery paper, approx 1" x 3"
2. Emery the base edge

Wet the emery paper.

Start at the ski tip and work toward the tail. With your thumb on the edge of the ski, make one long stroke from tip to tail. Use light pressure - just the weight of your hand.

3. Emery the side edges Place ski in vise, edge up, base facing away from you.

Wet the emery paper.

Start at the ski tip and work toward the tail. With your thumb on the edge of the ski, holding the paper along the side edge (remember the bevel angle) make one long stroke from tip to tail. Use light pressure - just the weight of your hand.

Turn the ski over in the vise to work on the other edge. Point the ski tip in the other direction so the base faces away from you. Repeat on the other edge, again working from tip to tail.
4. Finish Use a rag to clean off the base and edges.
