Diamond
Stone Deburr and Sharpen
Tools:
Diamond stone, brake retainers (optional), base and edge bevel guides
(optional)
| 1.
Prepare skis |
Locate
burrs |
Stroke
finger or thumb along full length of each edge with very light pressure.
Burrs will feel rough. |
|
Install
brake retainers (if repair is near brakes) |
 |
|
|
|
| 2.
Deburr base edge |
Wet the diamond
stone with cutting fluid, water, or melted snow.
Hold diamond
stone flat across ski base. Place thumb directly above ski edge.
With medium pressure, stroke the stone from tip toward tail along
burred sections. When the stone hits the burrs, it will sound "crunchy"
and feel different.
If the stone
does not hit the burrs, do not tilt it away from the base; this
will overbevel the base edge. Instead, go to step 3.
|
 |
|
If
you are unsure of holding the stone at the correct angle, use the
base bevel guide. See the "Base edge bevel"
task, but use the diamond stone instead of the file. |

|
| 3.
Deburr and sharpen the side edge, |
Wet the diamond
stone with cutting fluid, water, or melted snow.
Hold diamond
stone lengthwise along edge of ski. Start with the stone perpendicualr
to the base. Then, tilt it slightly away from the base to match
your side edge bevel amount (usually 1 or 2 degrees). Use your thumb
to help hold it at the desired angle. With medium pressure, stroke
the stone from tip toward tail along burred sections. When the stone
hits the burrs, it will sound "crunchy" and feel different.
Keep stroking until the burrs are gone. Test by stroking with your
finger, and by listening.
To sharpen the
edge, stroke along the full length of the edge after you have deburred
it.

If
you are unsure of holding the stone at the correct angle, use the
edge bevel guide. See the "Sharpen
edges" task, but use the diamond stone instead of the file. |
|

|
|
| 4.
Finish |
Use
a rag or paper towel to wipe any residue off the base and edges. Clean
the diamond stone with a wet rag, or old toothbrush. |
