Base Edge Bevel

Tools: File, base bevel guide, brake retainers, vise/bench, felt-tip marker

1. Prepare skis, tools Install brake retainers
Place ski in vise, base up.
Make sure skis have been stone-ground to a flat base
With the felt-tip marker, color each base edge along its length and width. Do not get the marker on the base material, as it may stain it.

Place the file in the base bevel guide, and place it on the ski

2. Bevel base edge

Hold the file within the guide. The file will only touch the edge of the ski, not the base. Slide the bevel guide forward with light pressure downward on the file. Use 8-10" strokes, and move along the ski length in overlapping sections.

Pick the file and guide up from the ski, move them back toward you, then set them down to begin the next stroke.

As the file cuts the base bevel, the colored surface of the base edge will be cut away, revealing fresh metal. Cut with the file only until the width of the edge is all metal, and has no more color. Do not cut into the base material.

Point the ski in the other direction to work on the other edge.
3. Finish Use a brush to wipe any filings off the base and edges.
