Transfer Balance to the Uphill Ski eVideo

Overview

One of the most challenging aspects of skiing is to start a turn where and when you want, with the skis parallel, feeling like you are in balance. For skiers who learned traditional technique, getting rid of the residual “wedge” or stem, where the new stance ski is opened into a snowplow, can be a long quest. For skiers who have worked their way through PMTS technique, the transfer of balance to the uphill ski still takes specific training and practice. That is the content of this video... How to bring your balance from the downhill ski at turn finish to the start of your new turn. After watching and practicing the content of this video, you will feel more balanced all the time rather than struggling to find your balance every turn, and you will be able to start turns more easily and more quickly.

This video is intended as a follow-up to the eVideo Balance on the Downhill Ski. You will get the most value from this new video if you have watched and practiced the content from that first in the series.

Content

*Review the “checklist” from the first video in the series, Balance on the Downhill Ski. This is how to arrange your body in order to establish and maintain balance on the downhill ski through each turn.

*Learn the action of the uphill stance foot that keeps that ski rolled toward its outside or little-toe edge as you balance on it.

*Once you have established balance, transfer it to the uphill ski with a minimum of movements; it's not a complete rearrangement of the body.

Purpose

Transferring balance to the little-toe edge of the uphill ski results in...

*A quick start to the new turn, necessary for short turns or on narrow trails

*The skis stay parallel and side by side, so they will fit into moguls and behave in unison in ungroomed snow

*Maintaining balance from turn to turn, rather than losing balance and trying to find it every turn

Prerequisites
In order to get the most benefit from this video, you should already...

*Know how to create and maintain balance on the downhill ski. That is the content of our eVideo Balance on the Downhill Ski which is a prerequisite for the content in this video.

*Know how to use the Phantom Move - “lift and tilt” - to create your turns, and to finish turns with the skis parallel. You can learn this in the eVideo Eliminate the Wedge 1 – Engage

*Know all of the Essentials – what are they and how to perform them. You can learn this in the paperback book Harald Harb's Essentials of Skiing and the eVideo Essentials Indoor Introduction

*Balance on Downhill Ski eVideo. The prerequisite, it shows you how to move and arrange all your body parts to establish and maintain balance on the downhill stance ski.

*Eliminate the Wedge 1 - Engage eVideo. Another prerequisite, this helps you learn how to flex the inside leg and tip the inside foot in each turn to create the arc of the turn while keeping the skis parallel.

*Harald Harb's Essentials of Skiing (paperback book) helps you to understand the Essentials - the component movements of effective skiing - how to perform them, and where they fit into linked turns.

*Essentials Indoor Introduction eVideo presents the Essentials - the component movements of effective skiing - at their simplest, and helps you learn and practice them. Practicing these movements indoors, in front of a mirror or camera, gives you instant feedback for quicker progress once you start to practice on snow.
*Tighten the Radius of Your Turns eVideo. This is a good follow-up. The extra practice on flexing the inside leg, tipping the inside foot toward the little-toe edge, and transferring balance to that edge will prepare you to make tighter turns as well.
