Is Reinfried Herbst the best slalom skier in the world? He is on a streak and has only three countryman to worry about. Marcel Hirscher, Benni Riach, and Manfred Pranger. These skiers are brilliant, fast and steady. The Olympics are just around the corner and this may be a totally different situation as the snow is different in British Columbia and the number of entries in the Olympic Slalom has a limit of 4 skiers per country. Stay tuned for an exciting year. I watch skiing on Universal Sports Network.

Counter Acting is the movement that turns

the upper body or torso away from the

turning direction of the skis. This movement

is critical in all skiing, without it you have

no power to release and you may end up

with rotation in your skiing that causes you

to use excessive upper body movements.

Excessive upper body movements throw the

body out of balance!

Rare sighting of Austrian Mountain Goat

These goats are called "Gams" in German, they are hunted for their meat and therefore are elusive even though their natural predators are rare or non existent. The French word for this type of mountain goat is Chamois.

Filmed while skiing on the Hintertux Glacier.

What is Counter acting in skiing?

The Phantom Javelin is a great way to practice your counter acting movements. The lifted ski placed at a forward angle over the stance boot helps to turn the hips to face toward the outside of the arc.

This is not your father's Javelin!

Notice the torso facing toward the outside of the arc and the inside hip leading the arc.
Leading the turn with the inside hip constitutes a counteracted relationship to the skis. To confirm this in your skiing, make sure you belly button stays facing your stance boot throughout the arc.
