Forward lean
The cuff of alpine ski boots (the portion
that wraps around your leg) slants or leans forward; when the boot
is fastened around the leg, the shin will extend at a forward angle
out of the boot, rather than vertically. The angle at which the
cuff aims forward of vertical is called forward lean. The
forward lean of ski boots varies from one model to another, and
from one manufacturer to another. Many boots have a fixed, non-adjustable
forward lean. However, our on-snow assessments have shown that forward
lean (combined with ramp angle) has a
strong influence on your fore/aft balance, both the position you
stand in and your range of motion. Therefore, an adjustable forward
lean is beneficial in optimizing your balance.
If your boots have adjustable ramp
and/or forward lean settings, see our chart
to help you choose the right settings. The chart guides you to the
proper settings for the adjustments based on body proportions. It
is easy to use and understand, and it provides an initial setting
for all skiers. Fine-tuning can be done after skiing in the boots.
